Oncologist

A doctor who specializes in treating people with cancer is called an oncologist. Usually, an oncologist manages care and treatment once a person is diagnosed with cancer. An oncologist is responsible for the care of a patient from the moment of a cancer diagnosis throughout the course of the disease.

Here’s a rundown of the cancer specialists you might see:

Medical oncologist: A medical oncologist is a health professional who usually specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. A medical oncologist may be one of the first doctors a person with cancer will need to consult. You’ll likely visit your medical oncologist for long-term, regular checkups.

Radiation oncologist: Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves treating cancer with radiation. Doctors who specialize in treating cancer with radiation (radiation oncologists) use radiation therapy to treat a wide variety of cancers.

Surgical oncologist: This is a surgeon who has special training in treating cancer. Your surgical oncologist may be called in to diagnose cancer with a biopsy. Surgical oncologists also treat cancer by removing tumors or other cancerous tissue.

Types of CANCER : A brief introduction

There are many types of cancer. Some of major cancer types are given below :

Adrenal Cancer:  Adrenal cancer is a rare form of cancer that develops in the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys. The small glands are comprised of two separately functioning parts: the cortex (outer layer of the gland) and the medulla (the inner area of the gland).

Anal CancerAnal cancer is an uncommon malignancy that starts in the anus - the opening at the end of the rectum.

Bladder Cancer: Cancer that forms in tissues of the bladder (the organ that stores urine).

Bone CancerBone Cancer can be primary bone cancer or secondary bone cancer. Primary bone cancer started in the bone; the cancer initially formed in the cells of the bone, while secondary cancer started elsewhere in the body and spread to the bone.

Breast CancerThe first sign of breast cancer often is a breast lump or an abnormal mammogram. Breast cancer stages range from early, curable breast cancer to metastatic breast cancer, with a variety of breast cancer treatments. Male breast cancer is not uncommon and must be taken seriously.

Lung CancerLung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that start off in one or both lungs; usually in the cells that line the air passages. The abnormal cells do not develop into healthy lung tissue; they divide rapidly and form tumors. As tumors become larger and more numerous, they undermine the lung’s ability to provide the bloodstream with oxygen.

Ovarian CancerOvarian cancer is any cancerous growth that may occur in different parts of the ovary. The majority of ovarian cancers arise from the epithelium (outer lining) of the ovary.

Stomach CancerStomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, is a malignant tumor arising from the lining of the stomach. There has been a significant decrease in the number of people diagnosed with stomach cancer in the past 60 years.

Thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer is a disease that you get when abnormal cells begin to grow in your thyroid gland.

Vaginal CancerVaginal cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the vagina.
